Designing tree-structured organizations for computational agents

چکیده
We describe a framework for defining the space of organization designs for computational agents, use our framework for analyzing the expected performance of a class of organizations, and describe how our analyses can be applied to predict performance for a distributed information gathering task. Our analysis specifically addresses the impact of the span of control (branching factor) in tree-structured hierarchical organizations on the response time of such organizations. We show quantitatively how the overall task size and granularity influence the design of the span of control for the organization, and that within the class of organizations considered the appropriate span of control is confined to a relatively narrow range. The performance predicted by our overall model correlates with the actual performance of a distributed organization for computer network monitoring. Consequently, we argue that our framework can support aspects of organizational selfdesign for computational agents, and might supply insights into the design of human organizations as well. Chapter X. Designing Organizations for Computational Agents
Organizing is important in computational systems, just as it is important in human systems. Organizational knowledge allows a computational system to recognize its role, and the roles of others, in accomplishing collective goals. However, as circumstances change, often organizational structures must change also. It is therefore important to understand how different organizations can be designed...
متن کاملDesigning a promotion model for managers in government organizations using an interpretive structural approach
Purpose: Eligibility for promotion is a strategic concept in the development of today's organizations, because it signifies and highlights the existence of valuable human capital, and at the same time, causes the organization’s competitive advantage. Accordingly, the present study is conducted with the aim of designing a promotability model for managers, who are considered to be one of the most...
متن کاملMinimum error rate training for designing tree-structured probability density function
In this paper, we propose a signal prototype classi cation and evaluation framework in acoustic modeling. Based on this framework, a new tree-structured likelihood function is derived. It uses a designated cluster kernel f m for signal prototype classi cation and a designated cluster kernel f m for likelihood evaluation of outlier or tail events of the cluster. A minimum classi cation error (MC...

متن کاملA Mixed Integer Programming Approach to Optimal Feeder Routing for Tree-Based Distribution System: A Case Study
A genetic algorithm is proposed to optimize a tree-structured power distribution network considering optimal cable sizing. For minimizing the total cost of the network, a mixed-integer programming model is presented determining the optimal sizes of cables with minimized location-allocation cost. For designing the distribution lines in a power network, the primary factors must be considered as m...
